Kaunas State Philharmonic

Not rated yetKaunas

The Kaunas State Philharmonic is housed in the former Palace of Justice and Seimas. The building was designed by the late 19th- and early 20th-century engineer and architect Edmundas Frykas, who designed many buildings important to Kaunas – the palace of the student fraternity "Neo-Lithuania" (1927), now the House of Pupils' Creativity, the Firefighters' Palace (1929–30), the Credit Society palace (1932), now the Lithuanian Central Savings Bank, and many other public and residential buildings. Construction of the Palace of Justice and Seimas in the temporary capital began in 1925 at the junction of L. Sapiegos and E. Ožeškienės streets and was completed in 1928. Designed by Edmundas Frykas, the building is classed as neoclassical with striking Art Deco elements. In 1936 the main block of the palace was renovated, and on 1 September the first sitting of the Lithuanian Seimas was opened in the great semicircular hall. In 1961 part of the building and the great hall were transferred to the Kaunas branch of the State Philharmonic of the Lithuanian SSR. Until then the Kaunas branch, active since 1944, had no permanent hall of its own; concerts were held in the country's regions, in various city halls and in the Kaunas Sports Hall, and the number and variety of concerts in Kaunas were planned by the Vilnius Philharmonic. In 2006, by decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the branch of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic became an independent concert institution – the Kaunas State Philharmonic. Reconstruction of the building began in the summer of 2005, and on 1 October 2008 audiences were invited into the reconstructed Kaunas State Philharmonic building, glowing with new spaces and colours.
