Europos Parkas was founded by the sculptor Gintaras Karosas in 1991. This open-air museum of modern and contemporary art covers 55 ha. The park's founder is also the author of the landscape specially shaped for the works of art. Between 40,000 and 65,000 people visit Europos Parkas every year. Europos Parkas is the first museum in Lithuania run by a non-governmental organisation. Income from tickets and services is the museum's main source of revenue, as there is not yet a support programme for non-governmental museums in our country. The museum's aim is to give meaning, in the language of art, to the geographical centre of the European continent, determined in 1989 by the French National Geographic Institute. The aim is for the museum to represent the best achievements of Lithuanian and world sculpture. More than 100 works of art by artists from 34 countries are on display at Europos Parkas. The park's expressive terrain – its hillocks and hollows and small ponds – forms an inseparable whole with the works of art. The meadows blooming yellow in spring and the noble harmonies of colour in the autumn mists are enchanting. Europos Parkas is considered one of the most impressive open-air museums of contemporary art.
