Bernotai Hillfort

Open 24 hoursFreeGolfo g., Girija, Girija

The hillfort was built on a separate hill on the eastern shore of Lake Girija. Its plateau is rectangular, elongated in a south–north direction, measuring 90 × 18 m, and slightly curved to the east in the middle. Striated, smooth and wheel-thrown pottery and iron slag were found on it. At the northern edge of the plateau there is a rampart 15 m long, 3 m high and 27 m wide (stones up to 60 cm in diameter can be seen in it), whose 6 m high outer slope descends into a ditch 1.5 m deep. The slopes are steep and 12 m high. The hillfort has been damaged by ploughing, and the ditch was destroyed by a quarry. It lies fallow, and there are steps on the southern slope. 100 m south of the hillfort, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Girija and the right bank of the Girija stream, an outer bailey was set up on a separate hill. Its plateau is oval, elongated in a south–north direction, measuring 60 × 30 m. Rough-surfaced and wheel-thrown pottery was found on it. The bailey has been damaged by ploughing, by a 15th-century burial ground set up on it, and by gravel digging on its northern slope. It lies fallow. At the eastern, southern and western foot of the hill, over an area of 0.5 ha, there is a settlement (excavated in 2004). Striated, rough-surfaced and wheel-thrown pottery was found. The hillfort dates from the beginning of the 1st millennium and the 14th century.
