Nestled in the greenery of Aleksotas, the Botanical Garden of Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) has, since 1923, been inviting visitors to explore its rich plant collections, the largest greenhouse and rose garden in Lithuania, and its traditional festivals, exhibitions, fairs, performances and concerts. The Botanical Garden, founded in 1923, owes its special aura to the Aukštoji Freda manor of the legend-shrouded landowner Józef Godlewski and to a greenhouse that recalls interwar Lithuania. Growing inside is an edible breadnut tree more than 120 years old that once graced the Oginskis manor; papayas and bananas ripen here, and biblical plants tell of history and symbolism. The rose garden in the park holds more than 1,500 varieties, among which the old roses reflecting manor culture are especially prized, and visitors are invited to discover the collection of wild roses and their hybrids. The restored romantic wooden pergola is another attraction. The plant displays and the mature park, with its interesting system of ponds shaped after the initials J and G of the former manor owner, are not only a place for scientific research. The garden has become a unique venue for educational and cultural activities: from the colourful "Plant Charm Day" and the mysterious "Night of Scents" to the "Harvest Festival" and the tropical butterfly exhibition.
