The Preila dune offers a wonderful view of the Baltic Sea and the lagoon shore – far to the south you can even see Cape Grobštas, which already belongs to the Kaliningrad Region of the Russian Federation. Closer to the dune, on the lagoon shore, curve Preila Cape and bay. On the other side of the lagoon, Ventė Cape is clearly visible. The views are beautiful in every direction, and a few crooked pines on the top make the dune very photogenic. To the south and north stretches the Great Dune Ridge of the Curonian Spit, broken only at the widest points of the spit – Bulvikis and Birštvynas capes, where the dunes were blown far out into the lagoon. In this part of the spit the Great Dune Ridge is green: its crests are covered with mountain pine, and its slopes and the hollows between dunes with Scots pine forests, most of them planted. In Soviet times several painters liked to paint on the dune, so the people of Preila gave it a second name – the Artists' Dune. The dune is 53 m high.
