Nida Fisherman's Ethnographic Homestead

Not rated yetNida

The Nida Fisherman's Ethnographic Homestead stands on the lagoon shore in the former village of Haken (the part of the village on the lagoon headland). All the rooms are arranged to reflect the life of the old fishermen: you will see authentic furniture, tableware and other household items, as well as fishing gear. Particularly eye-catching are the ornamented chairs, a dowry chest decorated with painted ornaments, a bride's wreath and silver wedding wreaths, and a fisherman's boots for ice fishing. Next to the homestead stand two authentic fishing boats. Beyond the fence, on the lagoon side, a replica of a Curonian sailing boat – a kurėnas – is on display. The homestead was built by local craftsmen in 1927 and, as was typical of the Curonian Spit, consisted of two houses joined together (the house on the west side was added later); that part was demolished in 1944. The rest of the homestead was badly damaged by the ice drift of 1968. In 1973 restorers from Klaipėda rebuilt both dwelling houses and the farm building. The house on the lagoon side holds an exhibition presenting the typical interior and daily life of Curonian Spit fishermen's homes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The homestead hosts folk theatre performances and folklore ensemble concerts, and folk artists' work and old crafts are demonstrated here.
