Driving along the Kaunas–Prienai road, just before you have passed through the town, you will notice a hillfort whose slope reaches the roadside. We recommend stopping to stretch your legs and climbing the wooden steps up Mačiūnai hillfort, which local people have nicknamed Bride's Hill. A legend is still told that a young bride was once being taken over this hill to be married by force to a man she did not love. When the cart reached the top of the hill, thunder rumbled as if out of a clear sky, lightning struck, and the frightened horses overturned the cart. The bride vanished, but people from the surrounding villages used to see her ghost on the hill. Nobody knows how much truth there is in this story, but the name Bride's Hill stuck for a long time. Historians tell a different story about this hillfort. It is thought to have been formed in the 1st millennium to the beginning of the 2nd millennium. Between the wars it was investigated by one of the most famous archaeologists, Petras Tarasenka. Its exact purpose is not known. The hillfort is included in the register of cultural heritage. Some of its slopes were damaged when a homestead was built, others when the road was laid and the Morkūnupis stream was dammed. From its top the whole panorama of Prienai opens up. Although geographically the hillfort belongs to Suvalkija, the hilly landscape you see is typical of Dzūkija. The sandy hills and pine forests are beautiful in every season. If your gaze wanders to the fields, look carefully and you will spot the Tartokas and Velniabliūdis bogs.
