Lithuanian Ethnocosmology Museum

The Lithuanian Ethnocosmology Museum is one of the places in Lithuania most visited by foreign tourists. The museum is located near the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory, next to a hillfort. The museum is also described as a special-purpose astronomical pavilion, as its three parts – an underground gallery with five halls, an observatory tower with a telescope and an outdoor exhibition – together create the impression of a mighty structure. The aim of this scientific site is not only to gather information about humanity's connection with the cosmos but also to offer educational services. It hosts tours and lectures featuring images of space captured by the cameras of the most modern telescopes. The second part of the museum is the observatory tower, whose viewing platform is at a height of 32 m. From there you can observe not only the stars but also the surrounding area. The impressive glass dome offers views of as many as six Aukštaitija lakes and the Labanoras Forest. And as for the stars, the starlets and the constellations! Those who want to see the night sky are invited to the night-time programmes, during which celestial objects are observed through a telescope 40 cm in diameter. No less impressive is the outdoor exhibition – a stone model of the Solar System. The sun's rays indicate the cardinal directions, the equinoxes and the solstices. Nearby there is a two-metre wrought-iron sundial and models of the planets. This sundial at the Ethnocosmology Museum is the largest hand-forged three-dimensional sundial in Lithuania, a reminder that people once realised that the length and position of an opaque object's shadow depend on the position of the sun in the sky. The village where the museum stands is surrounded on three sides by Lake Želva, so if you visit in summer you can take a dip in the clear water and then “dive” into space and experience a sense of infinity, the breathing of the universe.
