The Ninth Fort is one of the defensive fortifications of the Kaunas Fortress and a state-protected historical and architectural monument. The fort houses a museum that introduces visitors to the interesting and distinctive military architecture of the Kaunas Fortress fortifications and to examples of First World War weaponry and equipment. Accompanied by a guide, visitors can see the inside of the defensive wall and the posterns. Another part of the exhibition covers the period when the fort was a branch of the Kaunas hard-labour prison, shows the everyday life of prisoners, recreates episodes of the repressions carried out by the NKVD and reveals the scale of the crimes committed by the Nazis. In the original cells, where inscriptions left by people before their deaths survive on the walls, a large exhibition reveals the tragedy of the Jewish people in Lithuania and tells the story of the Kaunas Ghetto and the mass killings. The site of the mass murders is marked by a 32-metre monument made up of three sculptural groups by the sculptor Alfonsas Ambraziūnas. Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum is a good place for families, school pupils, organised groups and individual visitors to spend meaningful time and learn about history. The museum hosts various events and commemorations, offers guided tours and educational activities, and lets visitors explore the exhibition with an audio and video guide.
