In the cosy little town of Kintai, behind the forestry office, stands an impressive natural monument – a huge thuja whose size fully justifies its name, the "Great Thuja". This member of the cypress family is believed to be the largest thuja in all of Lithuania, and in Europe a larger one has been recorded only in Switzerland. The remarkable tree is almost 20 metres tall, and its crown is as much as 12 metres wide. Although every visitor wants to know the giant's age, it is hard to say how old the famous Kintai thuja is, because the tree has two trunks and its age cannot be determined in the traditional way by counting rings. It is known that the forestry building was built around 1902–1912 and that, once it was finished, its surroundings were landscaped, just as they are today. So there is reason to believe that the Great Thuja was planted then; it liked the spot so much that it grew into the largest in Lithuania. It seems the thuja is more than a century old. The impressive tree, declared a natural monument in 1986, has not stopped growing and adds a few more centimetres in height and width every year. Holidaymakers exploring the sights of Kintai should not miss the impressive twin-trunked Great Thuja. In the shade of this tree, which has outgrown many buildings, travellers can take a quiet breather and admire the grandeur of the century-old thuja.
